■ 전시소개
한국 현대사진예술을 선도하는 작가로 평가받고 있는 최종성은 미국 메인주립대학교(University of Maine) 경제학과를 졸업하고, 뉴욕대학교(New York University)에서 사진을 전공하였다. 2010년부터 경일대학교 사진영상학부 교수로 재직하고 있으며. 또한 2019년 9월부터 2021년8월까지 뉴욕대학교(New York University)에서 Visiting Scholar/Visiting Artist(객원학자 및 객원 예술가)로 2년간 알래스카의 환경과 지형에 대한 연구를 진행하였다.
최종성의 여러 환경 프로젝트 중 한곳이 알래스카(Alaska)이다. 과거와 현재가 공존하는 이 지역은 보호구역 특성상 사람의 손길이 닿지 않는 미지의 지역임과 동시에 관광지와 산업개발 및 온난화에 의해 급변하고 있다. 과거의 모습 그대로 유지하고 있지만 한편으로는 사라져 가는 모순적인 지역인 셈이다. Glacier Bay National Parks는 1980년 유네스코가 지정한 세계 문화유산이며 거대한 조간 빙하(tidewater glacier) 지대로 면적은 330만 에이커이다. 이런 아름답고 신비한 곳은 실제로 변해가는 환경에 적응하기 위해 투쟁하고 있다. 이런 상황은 마치 이방인의 삶으로서 미국에 적응하고자 했던 작가 본인의 과거와도 같은 것이었다.
